Jaguar Land Rover workers and union's are awaiting the news on which of the West Midlands plants are being selected to close. Late last year the news that one would be closed was released by the company. Since then the MD 'David Smith' has left and being replaced by Carl-Peter Forster.......

Since the new appoinment rumors have circulated that the proposal to close one of the plants has been changed and that both plants may now be kept open.

Jaguar Castle Bromwich and Land Rover Solihull have been asked by their parent company to agree sweeping terms and condition changes in order to safe guard one of the 2 plants futures.

The news was released today and included pension changes that amounts to a 25% reduction and other such changes to the workers employment contracts. Halewood has escaped the closure threat after negotiating changes in their terms and conditions outside of the normal joint negotiating committee that all un ions in the 3 plants should use.

Other news form jaguar includes the veneer plant in Coventry closing within 2 years and the safe guarding of jobs at the research and development plants at Whitley and Gaydon.

Speaking to workers outside the factory at leaving time the mood is of shock one worker K Wilson said. "This management team is hopeless it like donkeys leading lions. They close one of two plants that produce 3 cars each and leave the Halewood plant open, despite only producing one car, the Freelander, as the X Type is being stopped. They also keep 2 development plants open employing 2500 workers and we only bring out new cars every 5 years or so, what are they doing?"

Another worker K Naughton said " Our politicians in the West Midlands are hopeless, they have stood back and watched as the car industry here has been decimated. Longbridge, Browns Lane, Pegueot and LDV and now it looks like Land Rover or Jaguar , what next? They are good for nothing pen pushers who hide when the going gets tough."

As a crowd started to gather we was asked to leave the gates. A sad day for the West Midlands and Castle Bromwich / Solihull in particular.
